Island groups invited to apply for Wightlink sponsorship

Wightlink is inviting Isle of Wight sports teams, arts organisations, youth groups and environmental projects to apply for support through its 2027 Wightlink in the Community sponsorship scheme.

The annual programme provides discounted cross-Solent travel, helping Island organisations access opportunities on the mainland and enabling young people to compete, perform, train and take part in events they might otherwise struggle to reach.

The scheme’s primary focus is on initiatives that enhance the quality of life for young people and support youth development on the Isle of Wight. Applications are welcomed from youth sports teams and organisations, arts, music and theatre groups with a focus on young people, and environmental and conservation projects.

The impact of the scheme was seen throughout 2026, when Wightlink supported 20 sports teams, 10 arts organisations and five environmental groups. This was in addition to 10 chosen charities and 82 individuals supported through the Isle of Wight Council Talented Athlete Scheme.

Among the groups supported this year was Sporting Opportunities Isle of Wight, whose athletes travelled across the country to compete, bringing a host of silverware back to the Island. Environmental groups also travelled to support seagrass restoration projects, collecting and carefully sorting seeds to help restore the Solent’s underwater meadows.

Hundreds of young rugby players also crossed the Solent with Wightlink’s support as part of Vectis Rugby Club’s programme of training, fixtures and competitions.

Allan Bridges, Chair of Vectis Rugby Club, said: “Wightlink’s support makes a real difference to our young players. Being able to travel to the mainland gives them the chance to compete against new teams, develop their rugby and build confidence both on and off the pitch. For many of our young people, these trips are an important part of their development and something they look forward to throughout the season. We are very grateful to Wightlink for their continued support.”

Wightlink has been supporting Island organisations since 1987, helping many thousands of journeys take place over almost four decades.

Katy Taylor, Chief Executive of Wightlink, said: “The Isle of Wight is full of talented, ambitious and community-minded people, and we want to help them make the most of every opportunity. Our sponsorship scheme opens the door to experiences beyond the Solent – whether that’s competing, performing, learning new skills or helping to protect our environment.

“For almost 40 years, we’ve been proud to support Island organisations, particularly those giving young people the chance to take part, develop and achieve. We’re excited to hear from Island-based groups looking to take their activities further.

Applications are now open for the 2027 Wightlink in the Community sponsorship scheme, with support available for eligible travel taking place between 1 January and 31 December 2027. The deadline for applications is 31 October 2026.
