Plan your Island escape

Late summer is a brilliant time to visit the Isle of Wight. The days are still long, the sun’s still making an appearance and midweek trips can feel a little more relaxed once the busiest holiday crowds have eased.

Bring the car or motorcycle and you can make the day your own, from beaches and coastal walks to family attractions, events and great places to eat.

Things to do on the Isle of Wight

See what's on

From tea duelling (yes, we’re not sure either!) and top hats as Ryde’s Steampunk Festival to open-air art in Newport and cider at the Steam Railway, late summer brings all sorts of reasons to hop across the water to the Island.

Events on the Island
Two children ride sleds down a wooden slide at Tapnell Farm Park on the Isle of Wight, with an adult watching from the top on a sunny day.

Visit Island attractions

Fill your day with the kind of places that make the Isle of Wight feel special. Step inside Osborne, wander through Ventnor Botanic Garden, ride a steam train through the countryside or head for classic family favourites like Blackgang Chine and The Needles.

Attractions on the Isle of Wight
Aerial view of a calm turquoise bay on the Isle of Wight with small boats anchored near a sandy beach, backed by dense green woodland and scattered coastal houses.

Head to the beach

Late summer beach days on the Island have a certain charm. Stretch out on the sand at Appley or Sandown, hunt for dinosaur footprints at Compton Bay or find somewhere quieter for a paddle, picnic or coastal wander.

Stay a little longer

Some trips deserve more than a few hours. Stay overnight and you can watch the sun go down, enjoy a slower dinner, wake up by the coast and still have another day to explore.

From romantic boltholes and family-friendly holiday parks to hotels, B&Bs and glamping stays, there are plenty of places to make your own Island base.

Make plans on the mainland

If you’re living on the Isle of Wight and looking for a change of scene, with our midweek savings, it’s a great time to plan a trip to the mainland.

There’s plenty happening throughout the south coast and beyond, from Portsmouth events and city centre trails to big-name exhibitions, festivals and cultural experiences further afield. Take a look at our latest guide and find your reason to cross.

Choose the right route for you

When you’re bringing your car or motorbike, you can travel on either of our two vehicle ferry routes.

Portsmouth - Fishbourne

This crossing takes around 45 minutes and is a great choice if you’re travelling from Portsmouth itself, up the A3, London, along the M27 or further east.

You’ll arrive close to Ryde, Newport and the east side of the Isle of Wight, making it a handy option for Island days out, attractions and onward travel.

Lymington - Yarmouth

With crossings taking around 40 minutes, this is the slightly quicker route and is ideal if you’re travelling from the New Forest, Bournemouth, Dorset or the west.

It’s a beautifully picturesque crossing, too, taking you through the mouth of the Lymington River, past Hurst Castle and within sight of The Needles before arriving in West Wight.

Use the map below to compare both routes and pick the crossing that works best for you.
